Halloween in Tenerife?
No, it's not a custom here, but I did find this curious video. "Calabaza Libre" translates, more or less to "free the pumpkin" and this version, as can be seen by the landmarks, was actually filmed in Tenerife, but it's an ad for The Miller Party and I don't think that means free beer! :)

Tenerife: Something for the weekend 26/10 - 28/10
Miss Tenerife 2007
Undoubtedly, the biggest event occurring in Tenerife this weekend is the Miss Tenerife beauty pageant that is to be held in the area around the 17th Century Castillo Negro, in Santa Cruz, from 9 p.m. tonight.
This gala is back in Tenerife's capital for the first time in 14 years and entrance is FREE.
Some 37 candidates, aged between 17 and 26, will be fighting it out for a chance to go forward to the Miss España (Miss Spain) contest.
The Miss Tenerife Gala will include performances of various artists (doesn't say who) and, is to be presented by Esther Gómez of Televisión Canaria and model and former Miss Las Palmas and Miss España 1987, Sonsoles Artigas.
Miss Tenerife has gone on to become Miss Spain 4 times since the these contests were allowed again in 1961 (beauty pageants had previously been banned by Franco's dictatorship); a record only beaten by Andalucía.
Last year's Miss Tenerife, 22 year old, Adriana Reverón Moreno, was the first runner-up to Miss Spain. When she was asked what she would do the next day, she replied that she'd eat all the chocolate she could!

Dorada, Tropical and Reina - Beers of the Canary Islands
The Canary Island archipelago is famous for its sunny beaches, night life, excursions, hiking? Well people seem to find these islands suitable for a wide range of activities. One common factor is the climate, the Canary Islands are blessed with a pleasant temperature all year round.
So what does beer have to do with all this? Well, the fact is that enjoying a cold, locally brewed beer makes the day perfect, whether you relax by the pool or you happen to find yourself in a bar at a busy street corner in Las Palmas.
Since most of the people visiting the islands know how to enjoy life, it's inevitable they will come in contact with the beers produced locally in the Canary Islands. A quick search in Google gives you several reviews of beers, and as it seems the beers from the Canary Islands are appreciated and sought after by people from all over the world!
As you will see below, the beers of the Canary Islands are as divided as the administrative regions of this beautiful archipelago.
Gran Canaria Beer
The beer of Gran Canaria is called Tropical, brewed by CCC, Compañia Cervecera de Canarias. There is a cuban beer called Tropical as well, but they have nothing in common. Tropical is brewed in Las Palmas, and enjoyed mainly in the eastern islands of Gran Canaria, Lanzarote and Fuerteventura.
Under the collective brand of Tropical you will find Tropical Pils (the normal lager beer), Tropical Premium (somewhat stronger) and Tropical Sin (alcohol free).
Tenerife Beer
The people of Tenerife drink Dorada, and hardly any other brand. It will actually be very difficult to find a bar serving Tropical in Tenerife (though in Gran Canaria you'll find Dorada...)! Nevertheless, both Dorada and Tropical are brands within the CCC group. But that doesn´t mean they taste the same. Go ahead and try them both, you will notice the difference right away.
Dorada beer is served in the forms of Dorada Pilsen (normal lager), Dorada Especial (stronger) and Dorada Sin (alcohol free).
About five years ago a new beer was introduced to the Canary Island beer market, Reina. According to company statements, Reina tries to position itself as a compliment to the giants of Tropical and Dorada. Reina is by now sold all over the archipelago.
Enjoy your Canary Island beer! There are of course many forms of having your Tropical or Dorada, and if you move just outside the main tourist area you will need to remember the following in order to get your favourite beer!
A CAÑA means a small draught beer. The size varies, but I would say that a caña is in general about 25 to 33 centiliters of beer. If you go for a bigger one, you'll order a JARRA, being a jar. You may also order bottled beer, a BOTELLIN (25 centiliters) as well as a normal sized one.
Tip: In most places you can order beer in a frosted glass. The barman will pick up a glass straight from the fridge. A nice way to enjoy a cold beer. And it looks really refreshing too!
Another Canary Island beer tip would be to order a CLARA, which is a kind of shandy. Sometimes they mix the beer with Gaseosa, which is a light flavoured soda, not as sweet as traditional sodas.
By now you know the basics of Canary Island beers, so just go ahead and enjoy. But be aware, the sun can be very strong, and you will get thirsty every now and then!

What happened to the normal weather?
I'm convinced it's that global warming / climate change again, but now the Canary Islands (particularly the eastern ones, but it's apparent here in Tenerife too) are enjoying some rather unseasonal temperatures for late October. Well, maybe if you suffer from asthma you won't be enjoying it, but otherwise, I cannot imagine visitors complaining about this. :)
Apparently, what we have is another calima or sirocco, whichever you prefer (that's what Canarias24Horas said) and the "wind that we call southerly here, but which in reality is from the east," is the culprit, preventing the cooling trade winds from reaching the archipelago.
Saharan dust and temperatures of around 29 / 30 C (thankfully, the desert isn't too hot in October) will prolong for a couple more days.

More calimas and storms in the Canary Islands
Before we leave the current discussion about Tenerife weather, I thought you might like to know that the director of Tenerife's Observatorio Meteorológico de Izaña (Izaña Meteorological Observatory), Emilio Cuevas, said yesterday - during a break in a meeting - that, "In the Canaries we have the good luck to be surrounded by ocean."
Yes, I couldn't help thinking that if he's just noticed that, it must be about time that the poor man took a holiday, perhaps down to the coast, instead of being stuck in an observatory, up a mountain. But I digress ...
This, he says, will mitigate the effects of global warming, although we will notice greater levels of calima (Saharan Air Layer), caused by the displacement to the east of the Anticiclón de las Azores (The Azores High. See: Anticyclone and Calentamiento Global, Anticiclón de las Azores, "Efecto Ártico") and, that the warmer and more humid atmosphere that will probably be installed in the islands (ED: I thought this atmosphere had already been "installed") could make it more inclined that there will be "more probabilities that a storm such as Delta appears again."
The repetitive could / probably / maybe wording was in the original.
Interesting to note that while ABC's headline is Más calima y riesgo de tormentas (More calimas and risk of storms), elsewhere, the same news, reporting on the same comments made by weatherman Cuevas, appear under the more optimistic headline, Canarias será la región donde menos subirán las temperaturas por el cambio climático (The Canaries will be the region where the temperatures rise least from climate change.)
Depends whether you see the glass as half-full or half-empty. Some might say the occasional "surprise hurricane" is a small price to pay for being, generally, less affected than other regions. Both are probably, technically, true, but I can only tell you what I'm already seeing in recent years (after 15 years on this island): more calimas and damaging storms.
The good news, for tourism and for visitors is that the Canary Islands could / probably / maybe less buggered up by the now inevitable climate change / global warming than they might have been if they had not been sitting in the middle of an ocean. Then they wouldn't be islands ...

What will it take to "Reasonably predict" the weather in the Canary Islands?
Even the President of the Tenerife Island Corporation, Ricardo Melchior, says he feels outraged over failures in the National Meteorological Institute (INM)'s predictions for heavy rains last weekend.
The forecast was for storms, heavy rains and floods, when, in reality, hardly a drop fell, but the government had used the INM predictions as a basis for issuing an orange alert - which left us all looking a bit silly.
Melchoir recalled that in March 2006, he had appealed to minister for the Environment, Cristina Narbona, over the scarcity of adequate resources so that the INM could "reasonably predict" the weather in the Canaries. He classifies errors, such as last Friday's or over Tropical Storm Delta in 2005 as "inconceivable". Apparently, the minister then promised adequate resources, but no investment has been made since that date.
We agree, there'll always be uncertainty over weather forecasts, but you do expect something a bit more accurate in the 21st Century.
Apart from the fact that these inaccuracies screw up people's social arrangements when they try to exercise reasonable caution, it's just as important to avoid such false alarms - which lead to "The Boy Who Cried Wolf" situation - as it is dangerous to have no warnings at all.
We'd love to tell you where to find accurate weather forecasts for Tenerife, but if the National Meteorological Institute cant tell us ... May we suggest that for now, you lick your finger and stick it out in the wind? :)

Lifting the lid on tapas in Puerto de la Cruz
I popped the little green pepper into my mouth and let my taste buds savour its pleasant, slightly bitter flavour, made savoury by rock salt and olive oil; without warning, somebody thrust a white hot poker into my mouth and I lunged for the bottle of cool water to try to douse the inferno, whilst my friends collapsed in laughter. I'd just taken the metaphorical bullet in the game of culinary Russian roulette that masquerades as the tapas dish pimientos de padrón.
One of the joys of travel lies in exploring another country's cuisine and pimientos de padrón is one of an extensive range of tapas dishes that are popular on Tenerife, an island with an interesting gastronomic identity fashioned over the centuries by a mix of Spanish and South American influences with a soupcon of Guanche thrown in.
During September, Secret Tenerife highlighted the first Ruta Gastronómica in Puerto de la Cruz, a promotion of tapas and local ingredients; however, there's no need to wait until the second before sampling some of the delectable dishes in traditional and atmospheric restaurants and tascas around the town.
The intimate Tasca Muralla on Calle La Hoya is a cosy bijou bar where mojo verde (a local pesto-like sauce) adds a zing to a ration of mussels. At Tasquita de Min, beside the harbour, tables are at a premium on Sundays when Canarian families descend en masse and order frying pans filled with succulent lapas (limpets drizzled with olive oil, coriander and garlic). In El Rincon's beautiful courtyard, off Plaza del Charco, dark polished antique Canarian balconies and a towering palm tree overlook Bar Luis where a sizzling clay dish of gambas al ajillo, will get the juices flowing; beware, these prawns in garlic oil take an eternity to cool down and are guaranteed to scald if you eat one prematurely.
My favourite tapas restaurant is Cha? Paula, an old Canarian townhouse with a bar where local fishermen play dominoes and curse the football, a dining room and an eclectically quaint courtyard; any one of which is ideal for indulging in some of the best tapas in Puerto. The first time I ate there, I was served by a Bobby Ball look-alike who insisted he was good friends with Tom Jones and told me that ?the food?s great, but the service is crap,? only one of which was true. ?Bobby Ball? proceeded to serve up a feast including chipirones (delicious small tender squid); smoky cheese from El Hierro, chickpea stew; sausage of Teror (named after the village on Gran Canaria; although when the waiter set fire to it at the table, I felt it warranted another ?r?); And, of course, pimientos de padrón, one in ten of which can be hot enough to blow the top of your head off; a characteristic which makes them popular with kids despite their verdure tones.
Ultimately, the tradition of ordering a selection of small dishes 'para picar' is appealing because of a combination of ingredients; it?s sociable, fun and for the price of a couple of main courses you get to try a whole selection of flavours; it?s a great way to savour the essence of Tenerife.

At ease, Tenerife weather alert over
Friday's orange alert was dropped to level yellow, before being declared a done deal at midnight last night.
We did have one quite heavy shower after that, during the night here in the north west of Tenerife, but certainly none of the heavy rains and flooding that were forecast or feared.
The forecasters got it badly wrong, didn't they?
Whist it may be better to be "safe than sorry", this could so easily turn into a case of The Boy Who Cried Wolf. After several alerts that amounted to nothing, we were caught out when the serious storm hit us in 2005.

Weather alert in Tenerife for heavy rains
There's one thing we forgot about the upcoming puente or long weekend with a national holiday in it: Sod's Law and its affect on the weather! No, this is not an exclusively British weather phenomenon. Happens here too.
Based on information from the Spanish Meteorological Institute, the Canarian Government is declaring a state of orange alert, predicted to be in force from 00:00 hours on Friday, October 12th to 00:00 hours on Saturday, October 13th, because a storm and heavy rains, in the region of 30 liters per square meter, are expected in Tenerife and on the island of La Palma.
In the Canarian logic prevails and "you can't make this up" departments, the reports say it will affect, "Tenerife: Costa norte, La Orotava, Vilafor, Este, Oeste y Sur." (Tenerife: north coast, La Orotava, Vilaflor, East, West and South.) Well, I reckon that just about covers the entire island.
Seems redundant to list ... Oh well, mine is not to reason why. :)
We've certainly had heavier rains than 30 liters per square meter before, however, the report seems to suggest that they are expecting flooding.
An earlier report admitted that Las zonas afectadas por el incendio aún no están preparadas para las lluvias (The areas affected by the fire, still aren't prepared for the rains.) Mainly because, without the protection of ground cover, the topsoil and ash will be more liable to wash away and create rivers of slurry. So, putting two and two together, I think we can see why.
To the usual grocery list of recommendations to avoid flooded areas, water avalanches, gorges, falling rocks, is added some stronger wording: "avoid circulating" (in vehicles), abandon basements, disconnect the electricity, gas and water and do not touch electrical appliances if they are wet.
And, if you're on holiday, please follow the government's recommendation not to camp in areas liable to flooding. Now you're only allowed to camp in designated camp sites in the first place, so we wonder - we have no idea - how many camp sites were set up in areas liable to flooding? :)
Still, if rain washes away the beach volleyball, there are still many indoor pursuits available. You may be able to think of one or two for yourself, but as will be the case in Gran Canaria, while local authorities, banks and many small shops will be closed for the day, here too tourist areas are largely unaffected (by bank holidays) and the big shopping centers will be open.
Otherwise, stay attentive to the indications of the authorities.
Siga todas novedades de la alerta por tormenta que hay en la provincia de Tenerife. This is fun, if you read Spanish, you can get a blow by blow account of the weather situation from Canarias 7: a sorta "live blogging the alert", complete with interactive Google map and all. Try to stay awake.
The last two entries (arriving in reverse chronological order):
11.08: En Tenerife también el tiempo está estable. (In Tenerife also, the weather is stable.)
11.05: Sigue la situación de tranquilidad en la isla de La Palma. (The situation of tranquility continues in the island of La Palma.)
And Canarias24horas does it with diagrams and satellite pictures: Declarada situación de alerta por lluvias en Tenerife y La Palma.
All joking aside, I'm quite used to storms on these islands and this afternoon there is an ominous total lack of wind, which, when it dropped caused a really eerie quiet and a sharp rise in temperature to "uncomfortably muggy".
Such conditions do, generally, come before not very nice storms.

Tenerife: Something for the weekend 11/10 - 14/10
Long weekends that include a bank holiday in Spain are called puentes, which translates, literally, to bridge (we would call it a break) and this weekend is a long weekend with October 12th falling on a Friday. Here it's a National Holiday for Día de la Hispanidad (Hispanic Day) - you may know it better as Columbus Day. It is also the Puente del Pilar because it's the fiesta in honour of Virgen del Pilar or Nuestra Señora del Pilar ("Our Lady of the Pillar"), the name given to the Blessed Virgin Mary for her appearance in Spain and, either way, we start weekend events off on Thursday night.
With the open-air fiesta of electronic music, "Inspiración Tenerife 2007" on the esplanade of the Martiánez Beach in Puerto de la Cruz on Thursday, October 11th. Billed as "Funky, house, jazzy, disco, reggae, alternative y electrónica en general" (don't think any of that needs translation) with DJs; Carlos Domínguez (Tenerife), DJ WattsRiot (Fun-da-men-tal, Tenerife/UK) and Trevor Fung (Higher Ground/Muchosoul, UK).
Time: 9 p.m. to 2 a.m. Price: 6 Euros ('bout 4 quid), including a drink, available from Discoteca Vampi*s, music store Discos Sonora and the Centro de Información Juvenil (Juvenile Information Center).

Concierto de la Hispanidad
Spanish singer, Raphael, is to give a Concierto de la Hispanidad on Día de la Hispanidad (Hispanic Day), Friday, October 12th, at the Pabellón Municipal de Deportes (Municipal Sports Pavillion) in Santa Cruz de Tenerife.
English speakers might not have heard of Raphael, but he's quite an historic figure in the world of Spanish popular music.
First because he is the only Spanish language artist to have received an Uranium Disk (for 50 million sales of "Ayer, Hoy y Siempre".)
Then in 2003, after suffering serious liver problems, the singer became the recipient of a liver transplant, which has made him into an active spokesman for organ donation.
Nevertheless, this benefit concert, for which tickets are a mere 5 Euros (about £3.50), is to have all proceeds donated to Cáritas Diocesana, the charity which looks after the poor, homeless and socially excluded.

Benefit Concert: Voices Against Cancer
October, as I'm sure you know, is also Breast Cancer Awareness Month, which affects one in every 16 women under the age of 74 in the Canarian archipelago.
Sixteen local groups and soloists are taking part in a benefit gala on Friday, October 12th, at the Teatro Guimerá in Santa Cruz, organized by the Asociación de Mujeres con Cáncer de Mama de Tenerife (Association of Women with Breast Cancer of Tenerife), with the support of the social and cultural arm of CajaCanarias.
Taking part in the gala will be; Fabiola Socas, Mark Peters, Ballets de Tenerife, Chema Muñoz, Polo Ortí, Augusto Brito, Celso Albelo, Carmen Acosta, Tania Janosova, Javier Laso, Ana Belén Gutiérrez, Mara Jaubert, el Grupo Urania, Percumakia, Cuarteto Capriccio, Manel Cabero y Sabrina Lemus.
Tickets for the gala, available from 12 to 20 Euros, can be obtained from the Teatro Guimerá box office or by phone on 902 364 603 or 922 606 923.

Fiestas de Adeje 2007
If visitors in the south didn't have far to go to see some traditional fiestas in Arona last week, they're probably even closer this week for the Fiestas Patronales Virgen de la Encarnación y Sta Úrsula 2007 in Adeje, which is just up the road if you're in Playa de las Americas or, as they call the posh end these days, Costa Adeje.
On Friday, October 12th at 10 p.m. there's the Gala de las Fiestas with all the girls representing the district and singer Nuria Fergó. (Photos)
Saturday, October 13th sees kids activities from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. and 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. in the school sports center; a slot car rally from 10.30 a.m. in the Cultural Center and, at the same time, in the same location, an exhibition of pigeons from the local fanciers club. At midday, the hunting society will be shooting clay ones up in Taucho. Eucharist at 6.30 p.m., after which, at 19.15 is a Pasacalles (literally stroll around the streets) with the various town bands converging in the Plaza de España and, at 9 p.m. a lively, carnival-like parade or Cabalgata de las Fiestas with carrozas (carriages/floats) along Adeje's Calle Grande (Main Street). At 11 p.m. the party and the dancing starts!
On Sunday, October 14th, if you're up at 9 a.m. you can find out what a Diana Floreada through the streets of Adeje is. Yes, it sounds like Diana doing something with flowers to me too, but it's also been described as a musical piece designed to wake people up. Either way, the Agrupación Nra. Sra. de las Nieves are in charge. There's also more kids' activities in the school sports center; church services at midday and at 6.30 p.m. At the end of the latter, which will be accompanied by various town bands, will be a fireworks display. At 10 p.m. there's a Musical Gala of traditional, folk music and at 11 p.m. another late knees up to a salsa orchestra begins.
Patronales Virgen de la Encarnación y Sta Úrsula 2007
There are also Fiestas del Pilar 2007 from October 10th to 14th, in Taco, La Laguna; Fiestas in honour of Nª Sra. del Pilar 2007 in Las Lajas, Icod de Los Vinos and the Fiestas del Barrio de San Antonio y María Claret 2007 in La Orotava this weekend. Orquestas Canarias will tell you where to find the salsa bands playing (mostly at these fiestas around the islands).
Roger Hodgson in Concert
Remember Supertramp and "The Logical Song", "Breakfast In America" or "Dreamer"? Last seen performing a medley of those songs live at the Concert for Diana at Wembley Stadium, UK on July 1st 2007, Supertramp's leader, singer and composer, Roger Hodgson, is to play the Pabellón "Santiago Martín" (affectionately known as La Hamburguesa - The Hamburger) in La Laguna on Saturday, October 13th.

Miss Norte 2007
On Saturday, October 13th, the Miss Norte 2007 beauty contest is to be held in the Auditorio Teobaldo Power in La Orotava. The 20 candidates, selected via various local contests during the summer and, presented recently at the Loro Parque, represent various town councils and private companies across the north of Tenerife.
The contest has been held in the north of the island since 1997 and has grown in popularity: last year's event was watched by a quarter of a million viewers on local TV stations. This year, the town hall in La Orotava is even putting a big screen outside the auditorium so that those who want to do so can watch, because tickets to attend the event inside ran out so quickly.

Tenerife: Something for the weekend 5/10 - 7/10

This week we have autumn cultural events, traditional fiestas within easy distance of the resorts, a Rock n Roll Festival, the Canary Islands' answer to the Ideal Home Exhibition, the Tamaimo Hill Climb and much more ...
Fiestas del Cristo de la Salud Arona 2007
A very few people who stay in Los Cristianos, that end of Playa de las Americas, Las Galletas and the surrounding resort areas, may be aware they are in the council district of Arona. Almost none of them, however, realize that just up the hill from Los Cristianos is the village of Arona, where there are still some old, quaint buildings, a pretty little church in a square and, currently, until October 10th, the Fiestas del Cristo de la Salud are taking place.
Events for Friday, October 5th, include religious events from 5:30 p.m., a Gran Gala Infantil (Kids Variety Show) at 9 p.m. and, from 11 p.m. dancing in the plaza to the (Salsa/Latin) band "Sensación Gomera".
Saturday, October 6th, is Kids' Day, with bouncy castles, a foam party and various other activities in the plaza from midday. Religious acts follow in the early evening, there's a Fiesta Joven (probably euphemism for youth disco) at 8.30 p.m. and, more dancing the night away from 11 p.m.
On Sunday, October 7th, at 5 p.m. there is the, by now ubiquitous, fiesta football match between the married women and single girls. At 8 p.m. there's a concert from the town band and, guess what else? Yep, another knees up from 11 p.m. onwards to the band, "Sensación Gomera".
Arona is close enough to get up there by bus or taxi; kids are welcome (running around till they drop) and entrance to these events is free.

The road will be closed from 08:30 a.m. on Saturday, October 6th and rally car drivers will spend the day noisily testing their engines and gear boxes against the steep incline.

More traditional fiestas this weekend in Tenerife
At the fiestas del barrio (neighborhood fiestas) in La Perdoma, La Orotava, there's Muévete con nosotros (Move with us) on Saturday, October 6th from midday in the church square. This dance and exercise routine needs no translation: Aeróbic, Funky, Salsa and is probably to work off the 300 meter long pan con chorizo (bread and sausage roll) they made there and that I saw on TV earlier in the week. At 9 p.m. on Saturday, October 6th, there's the Cabalgata de las fiestas (Carnaval style cavalcade).
Fiestas for the Santísima Virgen del Rosario in La Laguna, Sunday night, October 7th, at 20:00 Fireworks. Fiestas de Valle Tabares 2007 La Laguna on Friday, Saturday and Sunday, with lots of stuff for kids, plus religious processions, etc. More of this weekend's fiestas listed at CanariasFiestas and Orchestras Canarias tell you where all the salsa bands are at fiestas this week.
