Trading standards officers are investigating a tour firm that sold non-existent flights. Bosses at the company have also been ordered to appear before ABTA's Code Of Conduct committee following at least 30 customer complaints.

One flight they sold to Tenerife, was supposedly aboard Monarch flight number 3106 departing from Manchester on Saturday. In fact, Monarch charter flight 3106 departs every Friday.

Unexpected Holiday Expenditure

Entry prices to tourist attractions were most keenly felt in the Canary Islands. Over half (54 per cent) of the visitors who reported a nasty shock when purchasing entry tickets were holidaying in these year-round resorts.

A day at Tenerife?s ?must see? attraction Loro Parque, for example, would set a family of four back €79 (around £55).

Speeding Away From The Beach

This is perhaps a strange thing to be doing at this time of year, but Belle Vue speedway star, Simon Stead, had to do just that.

Stead has been called into Great Britain’s World Cup speedway team for the opener, to stand in for the injured Mark Loram, but faces a desperate race against time to make it, because he had jetted out to Tenerife for a mid-season break.

Lions boss Neil Middleditch said he had called Simon but it took all day Friday to get him because he was on a beach in Tenerife. He was working on getting a flight home to make tonight's meeting.

Heatwave Warnings

The Telegraph, in Travel news in brief, reports that, "Visitors to the United States are being warned to take sensible precautions following the deaths of 37 people this week in a heatwave that has been spreading eastwards across the country."

It rather depends on how far east that weather front decides to travel, but we have already experienced some fairly elevated temperatures this month, so it is as well to be prepared.

At the end of July last year, the heatwave claimed 17 lives in the Canary Islands and in August 2004 the islands were put on a state of alert over 40 degree temperatures.

Heat is of most threat to those with existing health problems and particularly those with respiratory difficulties, such as asthma.

(July 30 brought some strong, gusting winds to the north of the island. Perhaps they were the tail end of the Birmingham Tornado?)

Long live the camphor tree and it does

The tree for July 2005 is the "Cinnamomum camphora" or camphor tree. A member of the laurel family (Lauraceae), this lush evergreen tree with its aromatic glossy green leaves is native to China and Japan. Marco Polo first mentioned the camphor tree during his visits to China in the 13th century.

As trade routes spread, so did the camphor tree. Today it flourishes not only in China and Japan and the Asian areas but also in Argentina, Australia, California, the Canary Islands, Egypt, Europe and Florida.

Canary Islands Date Palm

Phoenix CanariensisPhoenix Canariensis is one of the most grown and appreciated ornamental trees of the world. Its native habitat, the Canary Islands, is renowned for its richness in climatic diversity and its endemic flora.

The wild populations suffered a dramatic decrease during the early centuries of the Spanish colonization of the islands, which started at the end of the 15th century. Today the Phoenix canariensis is sparsely and un-evenly distributed on all the seven islands.

A description of the island of Tenerife of the 16th century said: " . . . the northern side of the island is completely covered by enchanting forests of palms and dragon trees." Now, here in the El Palmar Valley and at other places in and near Teno are among the few places you will still see these majestic trees growing in the wild in Tenerife.

Only the female palms produce the fruits. The fruits are not edible and look like small dates, up to 1.5 inches long (3.5 cm). They are not poisonous, but are very astringent.

Canary Islands Date Palm Abroad

Several species of palm thrive in the Bay Area's Mediterranean climate. One of them, the Canary Island date palm (Phoenix canariensis), graces the Embarcadero in San Francisco.

"The most regal, large-scale (palm) tree," the Canary Island date palm was brought to California from the Canary Islands by Spanish missionaries in the 18th century, said Damon Hull, sales and operations manager at Jurassic Palms in Albany. Junipero Serra planted them at each of the missions he established.

Some of the oldest Canary Island date palms in the state can be found at the historic Presidio in San Francisco. The Claremont Hotel in Oakland also has numerous Canary Island date palms.

San Francisco Chronicle - Palms up!

Massive and imposing, the Canary Island date palm is the center of attention wherever it is planted, growing up to 60' tall. In areas of high rainfall, like Florida, these palms are often seen with ferns growing from among the old leaf stems.

Young people from the West Midlands came out top in a recent Foreign & Commonwealth Office survey of the risks taken by young holiday makers, with 64% of people surveyed from the West Midlands reporting "having casual sex" as a favored holiday activity, compared to the national average of 28%.

The campaign stand at Terminal One, Birmingham International Airport (BIA), will be manned by THT staff and volunteers who will target 18-30 year olds with sexual health packs containing condoms, lubricants, safe sex materials, alcohol unit calculator wheels and bottle tops to protect holiday drinkers from having their drink spiked.

A recent editorial in the conservative ABC newspaper put the implications in simple terms.

"If things continue like this, we won't need to go to Africa to enjoy the tranquillity of the desert. We can just go to the Canary Islands, Valencia or Murcia."

Drugs trade hub moves to Africa

Spanish authorities seized nearly three tonnes of cocaine on a Ghana-registered vessel in international waters off the African coast on Sunday, arresting 12 Ghanaians, four Koreans and two Spaniards.

Spain said the traffickers had picked up the drugs in an unidentified South American country and refuelled along the African coast before setting off for Europe.

Earlier this week the chief of Brazil's anti-drug efforts, Ronaldo Martins, said a ship carrying 2.2 tons of cocaine raided by police 700 miles south of the Canary Islands last week, was linked to the Colombian rebel group, FARC.

Nelson's Failed Attempt on Santa Cruz

Jul 25, 1797 – British naval commander Horatio Nelson's right elbow is shattered by grapeshot during an assault on Tenerife; the arm had to be amputated.

Jul 25 from Wikipedia

Finally, after the English requested terms of surrender, "Don Antonio Gutierrez, the Commandant General of The Canary Islands acted as a gentlemen and, with great generosity, accepted these terms. It went further than this; the Spanish helped to ferry British wounded back to their ships and invited the officers to dine with them that evening."

Attack on Santa Cruz de Tenerife

But, don't go thinking that they kissed and made up and promptly forgot all about it!

The city of Santa Cruz takes great pride in displaying the gun with which the famous arm was reputedly shot. Also ...

"It was claimed that Nelson's arm was kept behind the altar in the Cathedral in Las Palmas, Gran Canaria. So far as I know no-one has refuted this. Anyone going on holiday to Gran Canaria might want to check out if it's still there. It would be one hell of a holiday souvenir."

Whilst the above claim is unlikely, if you visit Tenerife (not Gran Canaria) you will find many real souvenirs from the battle.

Santa Cruz and Nelsons Arm

Paintings depicting the battle can be found in the collections of the Municipal Museum of Fine Arts and the Regional Military Museum. (Museums)

The heraldic arms of the City, Port & Square of Santa Cruz de Santiago de Tenerife has a green cross, symbol of the Foundation of the Cross, which gave name to the city. Behind the cross, in red, appears the Sword of Santiago (St. James, Spain's Patron Saint), on whose day it was the city trounced Horacio Nelson. Under this sword appear three lion's heads, which symbolize the victory of the city over the English pirates.

Santa Cruz from Wikipedia in Spanish.

July 25, 1496 is also the date of the end of the conquest of Tenerife by the Spanish.

The date of Nelson's attack, 25 July, is still a public holiday in Santa Cruz, along with the town's foundation day, 3rd May.

"El Brazo de Nelson" (Nelson's Arm) is also the name of a wargames club, Club of Games of Strategy and Modelling in Tenerife.
