Bridge pair thrown out for peeking

The professional players, Andrea Buratti, 55, and Massimo Lanzarotti, 46, were playing an Israeli team in the European Transnational Teams Championship in Tenerife, which aside from the world championships is bridge's most prestigious competition.

Their disqualification, the biggest scandal to hit bridge since a British pair were thrown out of the 1965 world championships for also allegedly indulging in underhand finger play, transfixed the 500 top players gathered in Tenerife.

A Brazilian Love Affair

You know I think our little island paradise is finally getting a respectable place back on the map, judging by the quality (in MY opinion) of musicians gracing our shores lately.

CanaryNet report that George Duke (bio | discs) will be playing at the Casa de la Pólvora (as part of the 2005 Festival de Jazz de Canarias) in Santa Cruz de Tenerife on July 4 at 9 PM. This event, sadly, appears to be sold out already.

Brazilian musician, Carlinhos Brown is also in the lineup and tickets are (at time of writing) still available for his July 9 date at the same venue.

The Casa de la Pólvora was built between 1756 and 1758 and, apparently, is close to the sea.

A letter in which Nelson described his "perfect recovery" from losing his right arm in battle recently sold at Lyon and Turnbull, the Edinburgh auctioneers, for £42,000, ten times the original estimate. Britain's most famous sailor lost the lower part of his right arm after being shot in Tenerife in 1797.

Kansas in Concert in Tenerife

Flying in from London, after playing a concert there on the 12th, legendary 70's American rock band, Kansas, who celebrated their 30th Anniversary in 2004, play two dates in Tenerife on June 14 and 15 at the Auditorio de Tenerife.

The group, whose music was considered ahead of its time, seems like a good match for Santiago Calatrava's decidedly avant-garde venue.

Since the Auditorio has been opened, Tenerife has successfully attracted numerous "big name" acts, both in modern and classical music.
