State of Alert Over 40 Degree Temperatures

Public health announced a state of alert on Friday, against the expected high temperatures in the islands this weekend. The National Meteorological Institute advised that temperatures in the western islands could surpass 40 degrees centigrade.

Hospitals had not reported any incidence, either due to the temperatures or the calima on Friday, however, the persistence of these weather conditions aggravate risks, especially for children and people with respiratory problems. Sunday will be a crucial day for these groups after 72 hours of sirocco.

To reduce possible saturation at hospitals, the health department recommends that people go to local emergency centers first.

English Fans

Puerto Rican singer, Chayanne, who gives a concert at the Recinto Ferial in Santa Cruz tonight, arrived on the island from a date in Benidorm yesterday. The concert is part of his 17 city "Tour Sincero 2004", which terminates on September 19 in Seville.

The Tenerife date is something special. "Tenerife has the most numerous and most active fan club members, so of course Chayanne always expects the best of Tenerife", said promotor Mauricio Trillo.

As always when he arrives on the island, a group of fans was waiting at the entrance of the Hotel Mencey, to get autographs and be photographed with the singer. Among them was a woman, of English origin, who lives in Tenerife. Inés has even brought her 21 year old son, Agustín, from England for the concert. Yesterday, the they had the opportunity to get close to their idol for the first time.

Limiting Traffic to Preserve La Laguna's Heart

La Laguna, the ancient capital and still major University town of Tenerife, has at its historical heart a wealth of architecture and a Renaissance street pattern that is said to have been the blueprint for many South American cities. This historical center is to be preserved by a new plan to pedestrianize eleven streets and lighten the load on the rest, at the same time creating new walkways.

Some 3,000 new cars are registered in the 15 km square municipality each year. At many points, the intensity of traffic is over 1,500 vehicles per hour, not counting rush hours, and the narrow streets in this historical center are at their limit to absorb the influx. Peripheral roads will have their capacity increased, some of which will be converted to two-way traffic.

Tenerife, Favourite Destiny

Tourist numbers are down, although Tenerife was the least affected, with a decrease of 3.1 percent in the year-to-date. Between January and July, 1,996,824 people visited the island - 63,935 less than in the same period of the previous year.

In July, the Canaries received a total of 738,643 foreign tourists, seven percent less than in the same month last year. In the last seven months, the archipelago has received a total of 5,389,995 visitors, a 5.83 percent decrease on the same period in 2003.

The United Kingdom monopolized the market with 46.45% of the total of tourists.

Finding Spain: No stone is without a story

This item, Finding Spain: No stone is without a story, may be from 2001 and it talks about mainland Spain rather than be related to the Canaries, however, it sums up Spanish culture so very well and helps you understand the historical reasons behind our way of life.

What's For Dinner?

Apparently, everyone's blog has to stoop to this level once in a while, but after a delicious three-course lunch, I actually felt I had a useful tip to give you.

For starters, I had a nondescript green vegetable soup, which, I admit, came from a carton. Very unusual for me, but it was of the pseudo-natural processed variety. The main course consisted of grilled "Wild Atlantic Ocean" langostinos served with boiled potatoes and red mojo sauce. Is this a treat? Are you kidding? At roughly a dollar for 100 grams, I keep a huge box in the freezer.

The "newsworthy" part of the meal is that for pudding (desert for those of you who were properly brought up), I had the first of this years fresh figs, which I picked myself when I took the dog out for a stroll this morning.

This is early to find figs ripe and, it was only a few on one of the south faces of a tree that has seen more sun. Holly had half a dozen for her breakfast. Yes, the dog likes figs. No, she absolutely loves them and sits begging under the trees for me to pick them for her!

The crop is going to be huge this year, so, once the majority ripen, this will be a daily event. Last year I also successfully froze some to use at Christmas. I'll do that again and plan to make some jam.

If you are in Tenerife at this time of year and actually venture forth from your hotel complex, you can't miss fig trees growing wild everywhere. Pick them, enjoy them, but just to be sure, open them out in half from the bottom. Inside you will see lots of little white "strings". If these wriggle, DON'T EAT IT!
