Tenerife: Something for the weekend 5/10 - 7/10

This week we have autumn cultural events, traditional fiestas within easy distance of the resorts, a Rock n Roll Festival, the Canary Islands' answer to the Ideal Home Exhibition, the Tamaimo Hill Climb and much more ...

Fiestas del Cristo de la Salud Arona 2007

A very few people who stay in Los Cristianos, that end of Playa de las Americas, Las Galletas and the surrounding resort areas, may be aware they are in the council district of Arona. Almost none of them, however, realize that just up the hill from Los Cristianos is the village of Arona, where there are still some old, quaint buildings, a pretty little church in a square and, currently, until October 10th, the Fiestas del Cristo de la Salud are taking place.

Events for Friday, October 5th, include religious events from 5:30 p.m., a Gran Gala Infantil (Kids Variety Show) at 9 p.m. and, from 11 p.m. dancing in the plaza to the (Salsa/Latin) band "Sensación Gomera".

Saturday, October 6th, is Kids' Day, with bouncy castles, a foam party and various other activities in the plaza from midday. Religious acts follow in the early evening, there's a Fiesta Joven (probably euphemism for youth disco) at 8.30 p.m. and, more dancing the night away from 11 p.m.

On Sunday, October 7th, at 5 p.m. there is the, by now ubiquitous, fiesta football match between the married women and single girls. At 8 p.m. there's a concert from the town band and, guess what else? Yep, another knees up from 11 p.m. onwards to the band, "Sensación Gomera".

Arona is close enough to get up there by bus or taxi; kids are welcome (running around till they drop) and entrance to these events is free.

Tenerife 50s Rock n Roll Festival

Brush up your blue suede shoes, slick back that D.A. and get ready to jive, because this weekend on Friday and Saturday, October 5th and 6th is the Fifth Tenerife 50s Rock n Roll Festival.

Held at the Hotel Panorámica Garden in Los Realejos, this ambitious project, organized by Vucan Rockers Tenerife over two days includes performances by groups; Tihuya Cats (La Palma), Hot Vulcan Stompers (Tenerife), Los Vólidos (Asturias), Hound Dogs (Galicia), Uncle Charlie & His Pendejos (Valladolid) and DJ's.

Not to mention the odd Elvis Presley sighting, no doubt! :) 8 p.m. to 4 a.m. (or thereabouts.) Entrance 15 Euros ('bout a tenner) on the door.

Tamaimo Hill Climb

This weekend is the 33rd edition of the Subida a Tamaimo (Tamaimo Hill Climb), Santiago del Teide, near Los Gigantes, one of the most popular of Tenerife's rally events and draws a crowd of around 30,000 each year.

The road will be closed from 08:30 a.m. on Saturday, October 6th and rally car drivers will spend the day noisily testing their engines and gear boxes against the steep incline.

This year, dedicated to the memory of Raúl de León, who was killed on the Tamaimo Hill Climb last year, when his Citroen ZX hit a wall.

More traditional fiestas this weekend in Tenerife

At the fiestas del barrio (neighborhood fiestas) in La Perdoma, La Orotava, there's Muévete con nosotros (Move with us) on Saturday, October 6th from midday in the church square. This dance and exercise routine needs no translation: Aeróbic, Funky, Salsa and is probably to work off the 300 meter long pan con chorizo (bread and sausage roll) they made there and that I saw on TV earlier in the week. At 9 p.m. on Saturday, October 6th, there's the Cabalgata de las fiestas (Carnaval style cavalcade).

Fiestas for the Santísima Virgen del Rosario in La Laguna, Sunday night, October 7th, at 20:00 Fireworks. Fiestas de Valle Tabares 2007 La Laguna on Friday, Saturday and Sunday, with lots of stuff for kids, plus religious processions, etc. More of this weekend's fiestas listed at CanariasFiestas and Orchestras Canarias tell you where all the salsa bands are at fiestas this week.

More events, exhibitions and what's on, in our calendar.
