Tenerife: Something for the weekend 19/10 - 21/10
Fiestas de los Remedios 2007
Starting with traditional fiestas this week, as the day of the Fiestas de los Remedios in Buenavista del Norte is this coming Thursday, October 25th, events get underway this weekend with the Gala de Elección de la Reina (Gala Election of the Fiesta Queen) on Saturday, October 20th. Spanish-Filipino singer/songwriter, Shaila Dúrcal (website / listen) will be performing at the gala, while local salsa outfit, Malibú Band, provide the music for the subsequent knees up. 
Also running from October 11th to 22nd, are the Fiestas de Santa Úrsula in the town of Santa Úrsula in the north of Tenerife, with a variety of events over this weekend, which include the Encuentro de Solistas de Acentejo at which winners of a youth song contest will perform, on Friday, October 19th and the II Festival Floclórico (2nd Folklore Festival) on Saturday, October 20th.
Other fiestas this weekend include those in Adeje and San Antonio, Orotava. Orquestas Canarias will give you the rest of the listings for salsa / fiesta bands in the islands this weekend.
Young Art in the Streets of La Orotava
On Sunday, October 21st, "different events take place across the town of Orotava, in Plaza del Ayuntamiento there are shows of dancing from classical and contemporary to salsa, breakdance and folklore, while in other parts of the town there are exhibitions of painting, sculpture and photography; and theatre and story tellers."
Activities start at around 10 a.m. and prolong until 3 p.m., with around 300 young artists, most of them from the area, showing off their talents. You can download a PDF program / map showing where to find the exhibits, mostly in the historic center of the town. Not to be missed: apparently, this event drew a crowd of 10,000 last year.

The day before, on Saturday, October 20th, in the Plaza Franchy Alfaro, between 11 a.m. and 7 p.m., Orotava will be celebrating their eighth annual Encuentro de Mayores Villa de La Orotava (gathering of old folk) and expect around 600 wrinklies to attend, as in previous years.

Enjoy a night with lots of rhythm somewhere (shame they don't say where - follow the crowd) in Garachico for just 5 Euros with Dj MigueStyle on Friday, October 19th.

Fiesta HipHop and R&B
If you don't fancy hardcore, there's Ritmo Salvaje (Wild Rhythm) in Discoteca Kalima in Santa Cruz. This Fiesta HipHop and R&B features a bunch of names and places such as London and Manchester that might mean something to you if this is your thang. 12 Euros on the door.

Opera 2007: Don Pasquale, by Donizetti
Tenerife Opera 2007 continues with the second performance on Saturday, October 20th, at the Auditorio de Tenerife, of the comic opera in three acts by Gaetano Donizetti: Don Pasquale. An entertaining comedy featuring mix-ups and marriage that will delight all audiences. Produced by Auditorio de Tenerife and created by Stefano Monti.

Festival of Ancient Music
The Festival 'Antigua Música' in La Laguna offers a series of seven free recitals of music from diverse locations and times in history. The festival includes Iranian and Indian songs from the 13th Century, as well as a repertoire of music from Italy, Germany, England, France and Spain, featuring songs and instruments used during the last 500 years.
While the first three of these concerts took place last weekend, on Friday, October 19th, at the former convent of Santo Domingo de Guzmán, you can listen to Lo Stile Italiano: sonatas for violin by Italian composers of the 18th Century. On Saturday, October 20th in the patio of the former Convento de San Agustín: Las mil y una noches con Rangeela (1001 Nights with Rangeela) - Iranian music from the 13th and 14th Centuries with the Rangeela Ensemble. All concerts start at 8.30 p.m.

Photography Exhibition Vechisur 2007
Residents of one small area of Granadilla show the way things were with fotografías y antigüedades (photographs and antiquities) in the 2nd Edition of the photographic exhibition, Vechisur 2007 at the Casa de la Cultura (Cultural Center) of Chimiche in Granadilla de Abona. Runs from October 15th to 27th.

San Miguel Hill Climb
This week sees another crazy event on the Tenerife Rally Calendar for 2007, the Subida a San Miguel or San Miguel Hill Climb.

And finally, for those of you who want to stand (or sit) on a terrace, shout and sing silly and rude songs, Tenerife's football team, CD Tenerife are at home this week on Sunday, October 21st, to Eibar.
