Tenerife: Something for the weekend 11/10 - 14/10
Long weekends that include a bank holiday in Spain are called puentes, which translates, literally, to bridge (we would call it a break) and this weekend is a long weekend with October 12th falling on a Friday. Here it's a National Holiday for Día de la Hispanidad (Hispanic Day) - you may know it better as Columbus Day. It is also the Puente del Pilar because it's the fiesta in honour of Virgen del Pilar or Nuestra Señora del Pilar ("Our Lady of the Pillar"), the name given to the Blessed Virgin Mary for her appearance in Spain and, either way, we start weekend events off on Thursday night.
With the open-air fiesta of electronic music, "Inspiración Tenerife 2007" on the esplanade of the Martiánez Beach in Puerto de la Cruz on Thursday, October 11th. Billed as "Funky, house, jazzy, disco, reggae, alternative y electrónica en general" (don't think any of that needs translation) with DJs; Carlos Domínguez (Tenerife), DJ WattsRiot (Fun-da-men-tal, Tenerife/UK) and Trevor Fung (Higher Ground/Muchosoul, UK).
Time: 9 p.m. to 2 a.m. Price: 6 Euros ('bout 4 quid), including a drink, available from Discoteca Vampi*s, music store Discos Sonora and the Centro de Información Juvenil (Juvenile Information Center).

Concierto de la Hispanidad
Spanish singer, Raphael, is to give a Concierto de la Hispanidad on Día de la Hispanidad (Hispanic Day), Friday, October 12th, at the Pabellón Municipal de Deportes (Municipal Sports Pavillion) in Santa Cruz de Tenerife.
English speakers might not have heard of Raphael, but he's quite an historic figure in the world of Spanish popular music.
First because he is the only Spanish language artist to have received an Uranium Disk (for 50 million sales of "Ayer, Hoy y Siempre".)
Then in 2003, after suffering serious liver problems, the singer became the recipient of a liver transplant, which has made him into an active spokesman for organ donation.
Nevertheless, this benefit concert, for which tickets are a mere 5 Euros (about £3.50), is to have all proceeds donated to Cáritas Diocesana, the charity which looks after the poor, homeless and socially excluded.

October, as I'm sure you know, is also Breast Cancer Awareness Month, which affects one in every 16 women under the age of 74 in the Canarian archipelago.
Sixteen local groups and soloists are taking part in a benefit gala on Friday, October 12th, at the Teatro Guimerá in Santa Cruz, organized by the Asociación de Mujeres con Cáncer de Mama de Tenerife (Association of Women with Breast Cancer of Tenerife), with the support of the social and cultural arm of CajaCanarias.

Fiestas de Adeje 2007
If visitors in the south didn't have far to go to see some traditional fiestas in Arona last week, they're probably even closer this week for the Fiestas Patronales Virgen de la Encarnación y Sta Úrsula 2007 in Adeje, which is just up the road if you're in Playa de las Americas or, as they call the posh end these days, Costa Adeje.
On Friday, October 12th at 10 p.m. there's the Gala de las Fiestas with all the girls representing the district and singer Nuria Fergó. (Photos)
Saturday, October 13th sees kids activities from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. and 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. in the school sports center; a slot car rally from 10.30 a.m. in the Cultural Center and, at the same time, in the same location, an exhibition of pigeons from the local fanciers club. At midday, the hunting society will be shooting clay ones up in Taucho. Eucharist at 6.30 p.m., after which, at 19.15 is a Pasacalles (literally stroll around the streets) with the various town bands converging in the Plaza de España and, at 9 p.m. a lively, carnival-like parade or Cabalgata de las Fiestas with carrozas (carriages/floats) along Adeje's Calle Grande (Main Street). At 11 p.m. the party and the dancing starts!
On Sunday, October 14th, if you're up at 9 a.m. you can find out what a Diana Floreada through the streets of Adeje is. Yes, it sounds like Diana doing something with flowers to me too, but it's also been described as a musical piece designed to wake people up. Either way, the Agrupación Nra. Sra. de las Nieves are in charge. There's also more kids' activities in the school sports center; church services at midday and at 6.30 p.m. At the end of the latter, which will be accompanied by various town bands, will be a fireworks display. At 10 p.m. there's a Musical Gala of traditional, folk music and at 11 p.m. another late knees up to a salsa orchestra begins.

There are also Fiestas del Pilar 2007 from October 10th to 14th, in Taco, La Laguna; Fiestas in honour of Nª Sra. del Pilar 2007 in Las Lajas, Icod de Los Vinos and the Fiestas del Barrio de San Antonio y María Claret 2007 in La Orotava this weekend. Orquestas Canarias will tell you where to find the salsa bands playing (mostly at these fiestas around the islands).
Roger Hodgson in Concert
Remember Supertramp and "The Logical Song", "Breakfast In America" or "Dreamer"? Last seen performing a medley of those songs live at the Concert for Diana at Wembley Stadium, UK on July 1st 2007, Supertramp's leader, singer and composer, Roger Hodgson, is to play the Pabellón "Santiago Martín" (affectionately known as La Hamburguesa - The Hamburger) in La Laguna on Saturday, October 13th.

Miss Norte 2007
On Saturday, October 13th, the Miss Norte 2007 beauty contest is to be held in the Auditorio Teobaldo Power in La Orotava. The 20 candidates, selected via various local contests during the summer and, presented recently at the Loro Parque, represent various town councils and private companies across the north of Tenerife.
The contest has been held in the north of the island since 1997 and has grown in popularity: last year's event was watched by a quarter of a million viewers on local TV stations. This year, the town hall in La Orotava is even putting a big screen outside the auditorium so that those who want to do so can watch, because tickets to attend the event inside ran out so quickly.
