Puerto de la Cruz Could Receive Passenger Ships

Tenerife - our ship
Originally uploaded by Cathieo.
Canarian Government Councillor for Infrastructures, Antonio Castro Cordobez, said yesterday that his department wants to include at least one wharf that will take passenger ships within the plans for the new port in Puerto de la Cruz. The draft plans, which currently only include a sports marina and provisions for the local fishing fleet, are to be finalized this month. Works on the future port are to be commenced in 2007.

Such modification depends upon lots of other departments - not to mention public opinion. From a tourist perspective, especially given the penchant for shopkeepers in the capital, Santa Cruz, where most of the big ships currently call, to remain closed, Puerto de la Cruz would be a much better point to disembark to find shopping facilities, hotels, restaurants and other tourist attractions nearby.
