The Canarian Government's council for Industry, Commerce and New Technology has announced that they will study the possibility of constructing wind energy plants offshore in the Canary Islands. Some 8,500 GWh of electricity was consumed in the islands in 2005 and, it has been calculated that an area of 140 square kilometers would be needed to supply the islands; the growing population could increase this to 235 square kilometers - an area considerably inferior to the size of the island of El Hierro - that, if situated in the sea, would have less visual impact than on land. Technically, this is viable as systems already exist that take advantage of the wind and the waves simultaneously.
