Ycoden-Daute-Isora Anticipates Good 2006 Harvest
Provisional estimates from the Regulating Council for the Ycoden-Daute-Isora wine region in the north west of Tenerife for the 2006 Vintage are optimistic and that "everything points towards a harvest in the region of close to 1,500,000 kilos of grapes."
The first grapes will be harvested at the end of this month of July in the coastal areas and will prolong until the end of October. Such a long period of harvest is because of the different altitude levels at which vines are grown in the region.
They also say they expect a good quality from this year's production, despite the peculiar climatic conditions over the last few months, with intermittent rains, followed by warm days. These conditions have caused the appearance of diseases such as ceniza (Botrytis cinerea) and mildew, although the risk has been moderated by treatments recommended by the council's tenicians.
Practically 70% of the grapes grown in the area are of the Listán Blanco variety, elsewhere known as Palomino Fino or Jerez (Sherry) grape. The rest is made up from listán negro, malvasía, negramoll, gual, marmajuelo, moscatel and tintilla.
The council's valuation of this years growth, was of "A product of excellent quality, which, with certainty, will allow us to obtain wines we can be proud of."
