Revealing what made Guanche sites tick

Astronomical investigations conducted in the Canary Islands, the Spanish mainland, Tunisia and Morocco, have revealed a link between the orientation of archaeological remains and the sun?s position during the equinox.

The information is being taken by some experts to indicate that cults in the era before the Romans extended through the Mediterranean region as far as the Canary Islands.

Speaking at a news conference last week, César Esteban of the Canary Astrophysics Institute (IAC) said striking similarities pointing to just such a thesis have been found in aboriginal sites here in Tenerife, Gran Canaria, Lanzarote and Fuerteventura, in south and south-west Spain and in pre-Roman temples in North Africa.
