Permanent Firefighting for Teno Rural Park

Buenavista del Norte town council in Tenerife has recently asked the department of the environment and landscape to provide permanent firefighting coverage in the Teno Rural Park, mainly to prevent fires in the Monte del Agua, an important part of the local landscape that is particularly exposed to risk by high temperatures.

The corporation decided to carry out this initiative after evaluating the environmental conditions in the area at this time of the year, with extremely high temperatures, accompanied by drought that increases the possibility of fires around the perimeter of the rural park.

The mayor of Buenavista, Aurelio Abreu, emphasized the great environmental value that the area represents for the island. Monte del Agua has one of the largest laurisilva [1] forests in the Canary Islands, threatened every summer with disappearance by the threat of fire.

The request is for pertinent means of fire prevention and firefighting; pumps, fire trucks, etc., to be located in the Valle de El Palmar, from where any necessary interventions would be coordinated.

[1] Laurisilva is a sort of subtropical cloud forest endemic to the Canary Islands, Madeira, and the Azores, mostly composed of trees of the Lauraceae family and other "laurifolious" trees.
